Developing the Western Application of Chinese Herbs
-  A rationale for Kidney tonification in Western practice
From a physiological perspective, the kidneys are the primary organs responsible for fluid balance, nitrogenous waste elimination, regulation of blood pH and mineral balance. They also play an important role in red blood cell production (via erythropoietin secretion), blood pressure regulation (via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system), and the conversion of vitamin D to its active form, called calcitriol. However, in Chinese medicine, the Kidney (capital ‘K’) is an organ-meridian system that governs the structural integrity and functional performance not only of the kidneys but also the adrenal glands, ovaries, testes, brain, spinal cord, skeletal structure (especially lumbar region), teeth, anus, urethra and inner ear. The Kidney also governs related body fluids, tissues (including the bone marrow), hormones, and other substances produced by the kidneys, adrenals and sex glands as well as the functions of fluid balance, reproduction, growth and the faculty of will power. In the West we often think of the liver as the organ that un- derpins health through regulation of metabolism and detoxification, but from a Chinese medicine perspective, the Kidney  is fundamentally more important as it is the foundation for good health and optimal life expectancy. Kidney energy within the Kidney (organ-meridian system) may be low from birth and is progressively depleted with age; being particularly vulnerable to exhaustion from mid-life onwards due to overwork, a hard driven lifestyle, insufficient fluidintake, multiple pregnancies and chronic illness or stress. For most people, by the age of 40 year, declining Kidney energy is beginning to impact on their health. Unchecked, this can manifest as infertility, sexual dysfunction, menopause, andropause, prostate problems, impaired immunity, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, heart irregularities, anxiety, loss of physical drive and poor concentration. Traditionally, Chinese Kidney tonics are taken to replenish  reserves of energy (called Jing) stored in the Kidney, supplement energy (called Qi) within organs and tissues under Kidney governance, nourish the body’s ‘health potential’ (called Yin) and strength the body’s ‘vital functions’ (called Yang) to  promote and sustain good health, and help prevent disease. Our charter is to translate and scientifically validate the wealth of traditional evidence and where appropriate, integrate the pharmacology and energetics of Chinese and Western herbs to produce medicines for the Western practitioner.
Presented by PAUL KEOGH Technical Director  Medical Herbalist Naturopath
Paul Keogh is the executive and technical director of Global therapeutics P/L.  Paul graduated as a naturopath and medical herbalist from Southern Cross Herbal School and Nature Care College in 1986.  For 13 years he ran a very successful practice and has dedicated the last 11 years to researching and developing Oriental Botanicals integrated range of Chinese and Western herbal medicines.

Black Pearl - Five Part Seminar for Health Practitioners

Paul Callinan M.Sc. N.D. D.Hom, a naturopath of over 30 year’s experience, specialises in researching and teaching various aspects of natural medicine. He has now designed a 5 part Seminar series to teach Naturopaths and other Health Care Professionals the elements of Chinese medicine necessary to enable competent prescribing of the Sun Herbal Black Pearl herbal medicine range.

The Seminar series will include tongue and pulse diagnosis, as well as the basic elements of Chinese medicine and Chinese nutrition for accurate prescribing.

Paul has noted that in the twelve months or so that he has been using the Black Pearls he has seen particular success in menopausal problems, hypertension, fatigue, reflux, anxiety and depression, and is using nearly all the range of 86 formulas. The patents are well suited to common disorders such as anxiety, depression, menstrual disorders, digestive disorders, fatigue etc and generally combine well with existing naturopathic nutritionals and homoeopathic medicines.

“You can’t mess with these formulas. They are using over 1000 years of accumulated experience, covering a wide range of disorders often hard to approach using our Western biomedical training. They represent a new paradigm in treatment, based on the more vitalist Chinese view”.

“The Black Pearls are a comprehensive range of traditional Chinese herbal medicine formulas, presented as the familiar small black pills. They work fast, are inexpensive, easy to stock, and have excellent patient compliance and are all TGA approved”.

This range is brilliant. Now I can see why TCM practitioners are so dedicated. Chinese medicine at your fingertips. Suddenly we have a range of nearly 100 traditional Chinese herbal formulas available as practitioner-only product”.  Paul Callinan

Turning Back the Clock
Managing the disorders of Western lifestyle & ageing
Speakers: Paul Mannion, Roberta Barbiellini, Angela Carroll , Erica Smith, Laurence Katsaras , Gina Wilson, Rochelle Lane
As clinicians, we spend our days treating patients that present with a range of diagnostic labels such as hypertension, dementia, dyslipidaemia  and infertility.  The orthodox medical system treats each of these as discrete diseases, that once labelled can then be treated by the appropriate medical protocol, or referred to the appropriate subspecialty for further care.  Increasingly, research is now confirming what Practitioners of Natural Medicine have long believed, that many of these separate diseases are simply varying external manifestations of a single underlying process.  The application of strategies that address this core set of metabolic defects is then not just an approach for treating a disease, but can also be seen as a unifying strategy for the management of the spectrum of ‘Western’ diseases and accelerated ageing.

When a little Stress is a good thing
As a society we have been very successful in providing for our basic needs of food, shelter and safety.  In fact, it is now being argued that we have  been too successful and that the invention of a multitude of labour saving devices and the availability of cheap, plentiful calories is becoming a  negative for our health. Cellular biology has identified many of the processes that our systems call upon in times of stress (such as cold, lack of  food or injury) and these same pathways have been shown to slow or even reverse the process of cellular ageing, in a process known as hormesis.  Unlike our free range predecessors, modern domesticated humans have very little need for these stress responses, and as a consequence are  also missing much of the benefit they can provide to health and ageing.  This seminar will outline the key strategies that all patients can adopt to  harness the power of hormesis in their lives.
Cool the Cardiovascular fire
Recent studies such as the JUPITER trial, which showed a beneficial effect on cardiovascular risk from the management of inflammation, not  lipids, have shown just how critical non-lipid factors are to cardiovascular health.  Many of our patients are at risk for cardiovascular disease and  this risk is not being assessed by the standard screening panels that are commonly used.  Metagenics have developed a range of assessment  and treatment protocols to ensure that Practitioners get the best results possible when managing patients with hypertension, atherosclerosis  or angina.  Exciting new products will also be available to Practitioners to get faster and more significant symptomatic improvement of these  conditions, while the patient is addressing the underlying factors that drive these diseases.
What is the World’s healthiest diet?  it’s written in your genes.
Many of the foods that most Australians and New Zealanders consume are, on an evolutionary scale, very new additions to our diets.  Sugar,  white flour, refined oils, colours, flavours, preservatives and many other ingredients are very recent additions.  Some researchers also point  out that the regular consumption of grains and dairy products has only taken place for less than 1% of total hominin evolutionary history.    Up to 70% of the calories in our current diets would have been rarely or never consumed by pre-agricultural humans, and as such it is  unlikely that our genetic machinery has had the time to adapt sufficiently to cope with these foods effectively.  This concept is not new,  with the work of pioneers such as Weston Price demonstrating that as populations moved from a more primitive, whole food diet to the  modern, refined staples that now fill our shopping trolleys, the health of our people degenerated substantially within 1 to 2 generations.  This seminar will review the evidence for physical degeneration and the increased risk of chronic disease in people that have progressed to a more refined ‘diet of white’.  It will also provide guidance on restoring health and vitality to our patients by returning them to a diet that is more compatible with our genes.
Why you Will benefit from attending this Seminar
-Discover the powerful dietary strategies that can be employed to provide your patients with more energy, reduced disease and healthier ageing.

The Vaccination  Debate
Phonelink Seminar Presented by: Dr Viera Scheibner

Dr Scheibner’s doctorate is in Natural Sciences. After a lifelong career in micropalaeontology, she met Leif Karlsson, a Swedish electronics engineer. At Viera’s suggestion, Lief developed a breathing monitor for infants called Cotwatch. Viera and Lief collected data on alarms from parents who used Cotwatch. They noticed that as a rule, the alarms followed vaccinations. This motivated Viera to begin proper and  systematic research of vaccinations. Today, Viera is internationally renowned for her work on vaccintaions and adverse reactions.
In this lecture, Dr Scheibner will discuss the dangers and ineffectiveness of vaccinations including:
         •  DPT
         •  MMR
         •  Hepatitis B
         •  HPV
         •  Rotavirus vaccines
         •  Pneumococcus vaccines
Evidence as documented in orthodox medical research papers published in peer reviewed medical journals.
