Turning Back the Clock
Managing the disorders of Western lifestyle & ageing
Speakers: Paul Mannion, Roberta Barbiellini, Angela Carroll , Erica Smith, Laurence Katsaras , Gina Wilson, Rochelle Lane
As clinicians, we spend our days treating patients that present with a range of diagnostic labels such as hypertension, dementia, dyslipidaemia and infertility. The orthodox medical system treats each of these as discrete diseases, that once labelled can then be treated by the appropriate medical protocol, or referred to the appropriate subspecialty for further care. Increasingly, research is now confirming what Practitioners of Natural Medicine have long believed, that many of these separate diseases are simply varying external manifestations of a single underlying process. The application of strategies that address this core set of metabolic defects is then not just an approach for treating a disease, but can also be seen as a unifying strategy for the management of the spectrum of ‘Western’ diseases and accelerated ageing.

When a little Stress is a good thing
As a society we have been very successful in providing for our basic needs of food, shelter and safety. In fact, it is now being argued that we have been too successful and that the invention of a multitude of labour saving devices and the availability of cheap, plentiful calories is becoming a negative for our health. Cellular biology has identified many of the processes that our systems call upon in times of stress (such as cold, lack of food or injury) and these same pathways have been shown to slow or even reverse the process of cellular ageing, in a process known as hormesis. Unlike our free range predecessors, modern domesticated humans have very little need for these stress responses, and as a consequence are also missing much of the benefit they can provide to health and ageing. This seminar will outline the key strategies that all patients can adopt to harness the power of hormesis in their lives.
Cool the Cardiovascular fire
Recent studies such as the JUPITER trial, which showed a beneficial effect on cardiovascular risk from the management of inflammation, not lipids, have shown just how critical non-lipid factors are to cardiovascular health. Many of our patients are at risk for cardiovascular disease and this risk is not being assessed by the standard screening panels that are commonly used. Metagenics have developed a range of assessment and treatment protocols to ensure that Practitioners get the best results possible when managing patients with hypertension, atherosclerosis or angina. Exciting new products will also be available to Practitioners to get faster and more significant symptomatic improvement of these conditions, while the patient is addressing the underlying factors that drive these diseases.
What is the World’s healthiest diet? it’s written in your genes.
Many of the foods that most Australians and New Zealanders consume are, on an evolutionary scale, very new additions to our diets. Sugar, white flour, refined oils, colours, flavours, preservatives and many other ingredients are very recent additions. Some researchers also point out that the regular consumption of grains and dairy products has only taken place for less than 1% of total hominin evolutionary history. Up to 70% of the calories in our current diets would have been rarely or never consumed by pre-agricultural humans, and as such it is unlikely that our genetic machinery has had the time to adapt sufficiently to cope with these foods effectively. This concept is not new, with the work of pioneers such as Weston Price demonstrating that as populations moved from a more primitive, whole food diet to the modern, refined staples that now fill our shopping trolleys, the health of our people degenerated substantially within 1 to 2 generations. This seminar will review the evidence for physical degeneration and the increased risk of chronic disease in people that have progressed to a more refined ‘diet of white’. It will also provide guidance on restoring health and vitality to our patients by returning them to a diet that is more compatible with our genes.
